8 Fantastic Day Trips from DFW to Discover this Summer!



Howdy y'all! As a Dallas/Fort Worth resident, I have had the opportunity to explore the many hidden gems around the metroplex. With summer in full swing, it's the perfect time to plan a day trip and discover all that Texas has to offer. From quaint small towns to breathtaking natural wonders, there is something for everyone within driving distance from DFW. So grab your sunscreen and let's hit the road on these 10 fantastic day trips!


1. Waco, TX

Located just 1.5 hours south of DFW, Waco is a bustling city with a charming small town feel. Visit the Magnolia Market at the Silos, owned by Chip and Joanna Gaines of the hit show Fixer Upper. Take a stroll through the Cameron Park Zoo or tour the Dr. Pepper Museum. Don't forget to snap a photo in front of the iconic Waco Suspension Bridge!


2. Turner Falls, OK

Escape the Texas heat and head north to Turner Falls, the largest waterfall in Oklahoma. Located in the Arbuckle Mountains, this stunning state park offers hiking trails, swimming holes, and natural swimming pools. Pack a picnic and spend the day surrounded by nature's beauty.


3. Glen Rose, TX

Known for its rich history and natural beauty, Glen Rose is a must-visit for all nature lovers. Explore the Dinosaur Valley State Park, where you can witness real dinosaur tracks and even go on a guided fossil hunt. Don't miss the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a drive-through safari park with over 1,100 animals from 50 different species.


4. Canton, TX

For all the shopaholics out there, Canton is a dream destination just an hour east of DFW. Every month, the First Monday Trade Days takes place, where over 7,000 vendors gather to sell everything from antiques to handmade goods. Don't forget to haggle for the best deals!


5. Granbury, TX

Escape the city and head west to the charming town of Granbury. This historic town offers a variety of activities such as lake cruises, a drive-in movie theater, and outdoor concerts at the Granbury Opera House. Don't forget to grab some homemade fudge and visit the local winery for a tasting!


6. Guthrie, TX

Interested in the wild west? Then head to Guthrie, the birthplace of America's most famous cowboy, Will Rogers. See his childhood home, the Will Rogers Memorial, and even a rodeo. Make sure to check out the Guthrie Ghost Walk for some spooky fun.


7. Possum Kingdom Lake, TX

Cool off at Possum Kingdom Lake, a popular spot for fishing, boating, and swimming. With crystal clear waters and stunning cliffs, it's the perfect place to spend a hot Texas day. Don't forget to try out the famous Hell's Gate water slide for an adrenaline rush!




8. Jefferson, TX

Step back in time in Jefferson, a small town filled with Victorian-era charm. Take a steamboat ride on the Big Cypress Bayou or visit the Jefferson Historical Museum for a glimpse into the town's past. Enjoy some Southern comfort food at one of the local restaurants and end the day with a horse-drawn carriage ride.
